World Bride Reviews: Christine Valmy Salon and Ms Lora Jackson

Spa getaways have become the new fad for bridal parties and groomsmen alike over the past decade. For many, it’s the stress of planning a wedding that makes them so necessary. Nothing erases worry and makes us feel more pampered, more pristine and more prepared to take on the big day than a spa treatment. Across the country, health retreats and salons have sprouted up to accommodate parties both large and small.

For the brides who don’t have the time to leave the city and do a spa getaway until after the honeymoon, I’ve done a bit of investigating for you. If you’re still searching for a unique way to reward yourself, your bridal party of your fiancé, you should consider the Christine Valmy School. Last week, the lovely Lora Jackson was kind enough to show me around the facility and showcase the wonderful services offered there.

The trailblazing esthetician school, located downtown on 5th Avenue, offers a wide variety of services, from hydrating facials to anti-age treatments and a variety of skin treatments. It was the first of its kind in the United States and also the first to produce a line of natural, biogenic skincare essentials that treat skin with natural plant extracts, formulated perfectly for various skin types, tones and troubles. While I received a hydrating facial, which I would totally recommend, the estheticians here also offer anti-aging treatments, massages, makeup application and nail services.

photo 2photo 3

20140821_124848Like the other talented students, Ms Jackson, at the top of her class, lives by the motto “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” She loves “watching the skin come alive” and her technique, thanks to the hands-on approach of the school, has prepared her well to offer up her services upon graduation. Look out for her in the next few months, when she will be traveling and offering her services to groups or individuals ranging in character from facials to waxing, nails and makeup.

The school is able to accommodate your entire party in their studio. When scheduling your individual or bridal appointment, Ms Jackson suggests reserving an evening slot, where you can receive your service in the glow of the Empire State Building and New York’s beautiful skyline.

A quick aside— I’d also suggest picking up a few products to go in case you need a last minute touch up before the ceremony. Grab the exclusive products such as Lotion X, unique to Christine Valmy, that helps fight breakouts and releases toxins. My favorite was the Pore Soothing Mask, which was very relaxing and cooling, and would be perfect with a glass of wine or champagne.

Cartagena, Colombia: A Gem on the Caribbean

You’re standing atop a hundreds of years old stone wall, looking out over waves of the Caribbean Sea crashing into the beach. The city is relaxed, cosmopolitan, and tropical. It is a foodie’s, and a history buff’s, paradise. Low key and luxurious. Very old and very new.

What it isn’t is a drug war zone, but that’s what people might think when you tell them you’re going to Cartagena, Colombia. Blame it on lingering news images from the 80s. While Colombia has rebounded generally, people in Cartagena told me their city was never quite like that.

I spent 5 fantastic days in mid July in Cartagena. It’s full name is Cartagena de Indias, Cartagena of the Indies, and that accounts for why I felt like I was right at home among the Caribbean people my West Indian family came from – because I was.  The city has a dual personality, split between an old town – La Ciudad Antigua – defined by 16th- century fortress walls and a new city, soaring up from a peninsula with highrise hotels and apartment buildings. Construction is booming on the peninsula, with several new hotels going up.

The night I arrived, a wedding party was being held on one of the galleons that are docked in the Las Ánimas Bay. Fireworks from the reception lit up the sky.

Cartagena is on the rise as a destination wedding location, but note that if you are not Colombian, your civil and legal marriage would have to take place in your home country. Still, Cartagena opens its doors to you – even the nearly 500-year-old Castillo San Felipe fort that overlooks the city is available as a venue for your special celebration.

Same sex marriage is legal in Colombia, so a same-sex couple should expect a welcoming environment for their wedding festivities. The Cartagena Chamber of Commerce will be launching a program to help couples plan weddings in their city in the coming months.

You and your party would certainly be well-fed. The food in Cartagena is delightful. Given its Caribbean location, I was on a mission to eat as much fried fish and ceviche as I could. I tried both at several restaurants. My favorite fried fish was served at Pizza & Pasta in the Old City. For the bargain price of around 11,000 pesos (about $6 USD), not only was I served an entrée of fried fish, rice, salad, and lentils, but the meal was preceded with a banana and a delicious bowl of ajiaco, a soup with beef, chicken, corn, and other veggies. I washed it all down with agua de panela, a light, refreshing, not too sweet drink made from sugar.

My favorite ceviche restaurant was the aptly named La Cevichería, also in the Old City. I tried a sampler of various flavors of ceviche, made of shrimp, fish, and octopus, as an appetizer, and had a wonderful paella for my entrée. La Cevichería, despite being nestled among high-end hotels, was incredibly inexpensive.

What else to do while in town? The Old City is the place for historical and cultural explorations. The Gold Museum showcased the intricate and beautiful jewelry of the ancient indigenous people of Colombia. Next to the Church of San Pedro Claver sits a museum dedicated to his memory, housed in the house where he lived and worked. San Pedro Claver was the patron saint of slaves, who fought a dedicated fight throughout his life for the rights of enslaved people. The Church has beautiful courtyards, an impressive collection of religious art, and – during my visit – was showcasing a collection of Afro-Haitian art. I took a private walking tour of the Church and the Old City, which I highly recommend, and learned about Cartagena’s history as a major port during the time of Spain’s conquest of the Americas.  The Old City is also host to public events such as concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Colombia is known for the quality of its emeralds and gold jewelry, so come prepared to shop, as well.

Far more beautiful than the city beaches are those in the Islas del Rosario off the coast. It takes about an hour to reach the islands by ferry from the Cartagena city pier, and a round trip visit package including lunch is easy to book from tour operators throughout the city. The water is clearer and the sand is softer than that of the beaches in the city, so a trip to the Islas del Rosario is a must during any trip to Cartagena.

If you enjoy nightlife, the bars and nightclubs are located in Getsemaní, an older area of town located right next to the walled city. Whether you enjoy spending late nights dancing and drinking or not, make the time to catch a Chiva party bus. For 30,000-40,000 pesos ($15-$20 USD), you will be treated to a live band playing rumba music, a tour of greatest hits, tour of city monuments (which look all that much more intriguing in the moonlight), and unlimited mixed drinks. The liquor served is what is called the national rum, but unlike other rums it is made with anise and has a distinctive flavor. Most chivas get going around 8pm, and will take you to a nightclub if that’s your thing at around 11:00pm – or return you to your hotel if it’s not.

In fact, it was from my seat on a chiva that I witnessed the wedding that punctuated the night sky with fireworks.

Cartagena was high on my bucket list of places to see.  But I found that it wasn’t just a place to check off my list and then move on.  I cannot wait for my next trip to this beautiful city.

Bridal Accessories: The Ultimate Guide

Any bride-to-be knows that when choosing the perfect overall look for her wedding day, there is a constant battle going on in her mind between the need to fit in and at the same time, stand out.

Whereas wedding day traditions pull her in the direction of fitting in by looking almost exactly like every other bride that walked down the aisle before her the need to be remembered and appear more beautiful than other brides pulls her in the opposite direction of wanting to stand out.

So the question remains, how to stand out and be remembered while still dressing like a traditional bride? And the answer is…accessorize! On top of that traditional white dress wear the kind of jewelry and veil that speak to your true individual sense of style. Under it, wear shoes that complement the overall look and enhance it. Lastly, carry a bouquet made of your favorite flowers and accentuate it with accents such as crystals, pearls, or even quirky pins. Use your accessories to make your wedding day look your own!

Here are some options to help you accessorize your wedding day look perfectly and stand out in the best way possible from that other girl getting hitched in all white.

VEILS: RUNWAY VS. READY TO WEAR

Veils come in many different price ranges. A bride has the option of choosing to don a designer veil (from the likes of Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, etc.) for a higher price; or a ready to wear veil at a lower price, without having to compromise on the quality and beauty of the product.

Veils also come in many different lengths which then correspond to a certain overall look. For the sake of simplifying the process, I will break them down into three main categories and showcase both designer and non-designer options for every bride and every budget.

1) Short Length (Birdcage Veils, Blusher Veils and Headpieces). These veils tend to convey a lot of personality, are not traditionally worn and are flirty in appearance. An emerging trend seen amongst designers for this category of veils is headbands. Beautiful headbands worn on their own adorned with flowers or feathers as a headpiece or worn with blusher veils attached to them.

ETUDELOVE by Sara and Eugenia showcases a collection of extremely charming and feminine handmade blusher veils and headpieces that very much resemble those showcased at both Reem Acra and Jenny Packham at Bridal Fashion Week 2015. However, they come at a fraction of the price and are perfect for those brides that want to stay well within their budgets.

2) Medium Length (Fingertip and Waltz Veils). These are the most traditionally accepted form of veils and they give off an air of innocence. Most of the fingertip and waltz length veils seen on the runway were versions of mantilla lace veils, with scalloped lace edging which added a romantic touch.

Erica Elizabeth Designs offers a great selection of traditionally beautiful medium length veils with the same lace edging as Oscar de la Renta and Naeem Khan. These veils would look best when paired with a wedding day look that wouldn’t be too embellished, such as a lightly beaded gown with very delicate, feminine jewelry.

3) Long Length (Chapel and Cathedral Veils). The longest veils are meant for the most regal of looks. There were many designer veils on the runway this season with a cascading front.

JEWELRY:

Wedding day jewelry should be very carefully selected in accordance with the color and accents on the dress, veil and shoes. A bride can either opt to wear a necklace, earrings, bracelet or headwear. However, a general rule is to try not to wear all of these items at the same time. If a bride wears too much jewelry, it distracts the onlooker from the overall view and if she wears too little then she seems underdressed. Thus, if the veil and dress are heavily adorned, wear less jewelry; if the veil and dress are not as embellished, pile on more jewelry.

For the stylish bride with a budget, there is always the option of borrowing jewelry for the day of your wedding. Happily Ever Borrowed houses a great collection of elegant jewelry that can be borrowed at prices starting as low as $35.00. On top of the price of the item, the customer just pays a shipping fee of $12.99 and then returns the item back after using it for either four or eight days.hr60hr63

If borrowing jewelry isn’t your preference, then there are many fine jewelry retailers that can satisfy a bride’s craving for all things shiny. Mija is home to sterling silver and 18k gold plated jewelry, encrusted with precious and semiprecious stones that are affordable and luxurious.

Tejani Jewelry incorporates modern flair and traditional Indian accents from designer Urvi’s cultural background into couture accessories. These pieces are one of a kind and perfect for the traditional bride who prefers jewelry with a vintage, feminine feel.hr80hr44

Powder Blue Bijoux offers a wide range of couture bridal accessories in every category, including headwear with prices ranging from $29.00 to $225.00. Thus, there is a piece on their website to please every bride.

SHOES:

This is the area where comfort is key and the most experimentation with color, embellishments, textures and shapes is allowed. Even though shoes are hidden under a wedding dress most of the time, do not underestimate their power. The saying goes that the right shoes can make the outfit, whereas the wrong shoes can completely ruin it. This definitely holds true for your wedding day as well, so choose wisely.

Harriet Wilde is a British brand that offers worldwide shipping and is headed by designer Ruth Shaw. It is home to vintage inspired stylish wedding footwear that would glam up any wedding day ensemble.

FLOWERS:

A bridal bouquet can be as personalized as possible. When selecting one, the bride should keep in mind her favorite flowers, the season during which her wedding falls, and the color schemes of the wedding and her ensemble for the day. Or she can skip the flowers entirely and go straight for a crystal or bejeweled bouquet! Either way, the final result should be a bouquet that will help her perfectly round out her wedding day look.

Here are some of the most lovely flower shops and boutiques that will make any of a bride’s floral fantasies a reality.

USING LOVE INTELLIGENCE TO ORGANIZE THE PERFECT WEDDING

Using Love Intelligence to Organize the Perfect Wedding

by GWEN COVER

Dear Beautiful YOU

This is LOVE INTELLIGENCE speaking.

Who is this I hear you ask?

Well … I am the small loving voice of wisdom that resides within you!

I have come to you so that your dreams of an ideal wedding and the journey leading up to that wonderful day is as stress-free and exciting as intended.

I am your inner guidance helping you to cope with difficulties and to remind you to tap into your sense of calm and peace whenever you most need me.

I have observed recently the moments when you have struggled to make a decision due to fear, anxiety, irritation or shame. These feelings can be uncomfortable and are often attached to unhelpful thoughts and limiting beliefs. At times, they have provided wonderful life lessons as a gift to you. On other occasions, your happiness has been blocked. I wish what you wish for, and that is for you to design and organize the perfect wedding day.

I also hear your deepest desires and that is to continue enjoying all of the wedding activities towards your big day and thereafter—for you and your loving partner.

This is instead of you trying to combat potential problems by doing everything alone or getting annoyed as well as frustrated, overwhelmed and stressed with yourself, your partner, the wedding planner and significant others.

So now is the time to reconnect with me once more. The small voice of intuitive wisdom that is Love Intelligence inside of you—(that is you) and is all-knowing.

Please remember Beautiful YOU that problems will always arise. Either way, this is yet another earth journey calling upon you to listen to your inner guidance. To cope best and make decisions that fit with who you are. To communicate from a loving perspective and to feel good about the version of who you are becoming as a person that is entering a new phase in your life journey.

This moment is to be enjoyed. You and your partner are special. Treasure the moments together. Continue being happy and excited as you approach your wedding day and enter into marriage. Love Intelligence will always be here for you. Relax in the sure faith that everything is going to plan.

ACCESS LOVE INTELLIGENCE:

So here’s what you can do to access and deepen the connection to me when you need me.

Please remember that it does not matter where or when you access me, but it does matter HOW you tap into me. My voice is small amongst the chatter of your mind and the outside experiences that you have everyday. So you need to listen intently.

I will provide guidance in any format (words, images, feelings, people) to help you make the decision that makes the difference; for you to feel a sense of knowing; to have the ‘aha’ moments of inspiration and for the oozing of love vibrations to be expressed through the lens of your caring heart and smiles.

So let us begin with one of many ways in which to access Love Intelligence.

1. Begin by finding a place that makes you feel great (such as an open/outdoor space, e.g., nature or your bedroom offering privacy).

2. Use accessories to trigger the emotion of well-being (such as playing music or sitting in silence).

3. And connect with me by connecting with your body (it’s best to close your eyes but you don’t have to) and notice what is going on inside your body.

4. Take a few deep breaths inhaling and exhaling as deeply as possible until you feel totally relaxed. Focus on your breathing.

5. Stay still.

6. Silently try to quiet your mind in whichever way works for you. This will help you to increase your intuitive awareness.

7. Become settled and stay in this feeling for a while.

8. Feel the peace, calm and relaxation.

9. This is the time to offer a problem that is most important to you to resolve. Give this question to me and listen for the answer—patiently.

10. You will know and trust when you receive the answer(s) or solution(s). It will feel ‘right’ although you may second guess yourself in applying it.

To avoid second guessing, you will need to follow my advice which requires faith, trust and confidence. You have all of these qualities so try not to worry.

If you need any support—intuitively ask the person you know is the ‘right’ person to help you organize your wedding and to enjoy the journey with you.

Now … go and enjoy your wedding day and give my love to your partner.

With love from my heart to your heart.

Fond Regards

Love Intelligence

Experiencing LUSH Spa

New York's LUSH SPA

EXPERIENCING LUSH SPA
by Victor Amos

Hidden among the skyscrapers of midtown, and tucked into the second floor of a retail shop, lies LUSH’s first U.S. spa. The natural beauty cosmetics chain, known for its extraordinary bath bombs and facial cleansers, is bringing an entirely new experience to the New York market – and their approach is very “hands-on.” LUSH has sent a team of massage therapists to train at the original LUSH Spa in England, so that you can experience their unique menu of treatments without hopping on an airplane.

New York's LUSH SPA

The experience begins on the ground floor of LUSH’s 2-story space on the corner of Lexington Avenue and 61st Street. You make a quick check-in at the front counter, and are promptly whisked past the whimsical sights and smells of the retail store, up the stairs, where you enter a beautifully-appointed waiting area. The waiting area of the spa is themed to look like an English countryside cottage, complete with weathered wooden cabinetry, vintage books, mason jars filled with wild flowers, and a rustic hodgepodge of wooden furniture.

New York's LUSH SPA

Your session starts with a meet-and-greet consultation with your massage therapist. You sit at the large kitchen table and go through a brief (but necessary) survey of your health, while also discussing what nooks and crannies you need the kinks worked out of. After a small chat, you are taken to your room … and that’s when the real magic happens!

New York's LUSH SPA

I chose to get a spa treatment called “The Comforter?” (yes, the question mark is part of the title). The Comforter? is not an ordinary massage, it is actually an exfoliating treatment. Exclusively for its spas, LUSH creates custom body products that can only be experienced during a treatment; they can’t be purchased. My treatment called for a chocolate body scrub (made of rhassoul mud, raw cacao paste, carob, and scrubby ground adzuki beans) to exfoliate my skin, and a rose body serum (made with illipe butter, shea butter, rose clay, and argan oil) to hydrate after the scrub.

New York's LUSH SPA

My treatment commenced with my undressing and sandwiching my body between a marshmallow-soft mattress and a fluffy heated duvet cover. OH. MY. GOD. Quite honestly, the treatment could have begun and ended here. I’d never been on a massage table like this one. While staring up at the constellations being projected onto the ceiling, my mind and body melted into a mush of relaxation; it was like being back in the womb again.  While the chocolate body scrub was being melted by candle, I was clearing my mind of its troubles, and focusing on the soundtrack to my treatment.

Now, while you may find the exclusive body products unique, there is another layer to the experience that makes it special. LUSH partnered with folk-musician Simon Emmerson to create a custom soundtrack for each spa treatment. Your entire session is colored by tranquil, yet validating tunes being gently whispered through the surround-sound speaker system above head. While listening to the custom soundtrack, I actually recognized many of the contemporary pop and soft-rock song covers … albeit a folksy, English rendition of them.

For the next 60 minutes, the expertly-trained massage therapist meticulously navigated my limbs as though she were a ballerina in a presentation of Swan Lake. Without exaggeration, the masseuse performs a rhythmically-synchronized dance, akin to the ebb and flow of an ocean shoreline, as they careen across your extremities. The sensations of pressure and release, timed to the exact stroke of the music, is a fine detail that sets this spa’s set of treatments apart from any other.

New York's LUSH SPA

To close out my service, I re-clothed myself and rendezvoused with my masseuse in the waiting area. I shared my never-ending ramble of thank yous and praises while she prepared a unique “mocktail” cocktail for me. My treatment came with a delicious drink consisting of sparkling water, rose water, and a fluffy piece of cotton candy, which I dissolved into the effervescent concoction.

New York's LUSH SPA

The full-circle moment of this experience was watching that piece of cotton candy dissolve into the fizzy pool of water. It almost made me chuckle, as I felt like all of the tension and stress that I came in with, disappeared just the same.
